So, you’ve decided to remodel your home. Now you need to find a contractor who will get the job done in the time frame promised, and at or near the estimated cost. Be wary when looking at home improvement contractors, or else you can find yourself in a construction nightmare that can cost you tens of thousands of dollars. When it comes a hiring a contractor, doing some investigative work beforehand will save you a lot of hassle down the road.

Regardless of whether you are planning a basement remodel, a kitchen remodel, a bathroom remodel or want some room additions in an expansive home remodel, it is always a good first step to contact your local builders association for a list of contractors who are members as this will help you avoid the cowboy builders and rogue traders. Once you have narrowed down your list check with your state’s regulatory or licensing board. You want to make sure your potential contractor is licensed and find out if he has any upheld complaints against his work. Its a good idea toi also contact the Better Business Bureau. Once you have done your research, solicit bids from at least three contractors. You shouldn’t necessarily hire the lowest bidder either; remember, they have to pay for their supplies and labor costs, so an excessively low bid should be a red flag.

Once you’ve narrowed your list down, ask your prospective residential contractors some questions. How long have they been in business? If they subcontract, do they have a stable of subcontractors that they work with regularly? Who are their suppliers? Contact the subcontractors and suppliers and find out if they have good working relationships with the contractor. You should also ask for three references from past clients. Find out if they are satisfied with the work, if the project was completed on time and at the quoted cost. Once you find a contractor you feel comfortable with, you are ready for the contract.

You should never hire a residential contractor without a written building contract. The building contract should state exactly what work is to be done, the cost of the project, approximately when it will be completed, and the materials to be used, including the brand names. It can be difficult to find a contractor who is reliable and reputable. Doing the homework before you hire is time consuming, but remember you are investing a substantial amount of money in your home improvement project. You want it to be money well spent.

Back in my twenties, I rented a small quaint house in San Francisco, just a short distance to the beach. The house was plain and simple with a small front yard. There was only a beautiful rose colored daisy like perennial and a wealth of cineraria growing there. There was a porch, two windows facing the street and two rundown windowbox planters. There was nothing inside them, not even some dirt, which surprised me. I found the house charismatic. Having never enjoyed the pleasure of a garden, as I had just moved for a third story Victorian apartment, I was very pleased with the possibilities of the diamond in the rough. All it really needed is time, effort and lots of love in order to come alive.

My first improvement was filling up those window box planters. Even though, my budget matched the appearance of the house, I did want the best results for my money. Naturally, I began with the window boxes, by adding some potting soil and a few flowers. Now I was in business.

Since it was winter when I relocated, I immediately thought of tulips and daffodils. These are easily planted and offer a generous color of spring within a few short months. Easily, I visualized this magnificent burst of color surrounding my front door. After setting my bulbs, I set my mind to planning out the summer flowers for my window box planters. Keep in mind that the San Francisco beach area has a microclimate and is somewhat restrictive. There is fog and then there is fog and then there is even more fog. This foggy climate was made even more dense by the gray of the wooden walls, the roof and even the dull gray of the window box planters. Can we say, no imagination at all?

Magenta paint was my choice, and I painted the front door and trim and your guessed it, even the window boxes. It did look much better, even if I say so myself. The cineraria stood out very stunningly, as the exterior of the house livened up drastically.

When the tulips and daffodils finally surfaced and bloomed, I was delighted. I’d decided by then what I’d be planting for summer and fall, which coincidentally, but happily, went well with my windowbox planter color. I carefully interplanted begonias, purple and magenta fuchsias between the bulbs and threw in some deep blue trailing lobelias for good measure. By the time the bulbs died down for the summer, these new residents were well entrenched, thriving in the moist and overcast environment. I discovered that variegated coleus inserted yet more color. Visitors commented positively on this delicious display.

Eventually, fall became winter and pink, white and red cyclamens quickly replaced the summer flowers. I brought my begonias inside to wait out the winter in pots. However, ferns and spider plants began taking over the underside of the roof of the porch, as they hung from their hooks, so reminiscent of delightful ballroom belles. It is interestingly amazing how much difference a couple of four foot window box planters can give a house such wonderful curb appeal.
